Art and Sacred Places will be in Winchester Cathedral on Thursday 26th January 2012 from 7-9.30 pm for ‘Space for Peace’, with ‘Drawing Place’ a creative visual arts practice, led by Winchester artist and curator Trish Bould, which develops participatory projects in the public realm. ‘Space for Peace’ is an interfaith event, principally for choirs of all ages and different faith groups, to bring their own music to sing for peace on Holocaust Memorial Day. ‘Space for Peace’ is organized by Dr Vicky Fieldwick and directed by Professor June Boyce-Tillman MBE of the University of Winchester. Martin Creed: Bell Ringing for the Olympics

Turner Prize Winner Martin Creed calls on bell ringers across the country to ring their bells as quickly and loudly as possible for three minutes at 8.00am on 27^th July 2012 marking the start of the London 2012 Olympics.

Design a Chair: Competition

The Church of England is holding a competition to seek well made, affordable seats that enhance the church buildings they are placed in. The aim of the competition is to raise the standard of replacement seats where it is deemed appropriate for existing seating to be removed, and also to engage young and established designers in the challenges posed by seating in historic church interiors. Professor John Haldane, Professor of Philosophy at the University of St Andrew’s, has written kindly written a complimentary review, about the Art and Sacred Places’ Bristol City Council commissions at Roman Catholic secondary schools, which traces the history and influence of artwork for schools. The rich connotations of ‘forma’s’ recent performance ‘The Companion of Space’ in Winchester Cathedral’s Quire have produced many positive comments from the enrapt audience including, “The performance had a hypnotic effect – very powerful. As the Venice Biennale 2011 draws to a close I am still thinking, as was intended, about Thomas Hirschhorn’s ‘Crystal of Resistance’ for the Swiss Pavilion. Although the presence of ‘too much’ was designed to resist opinions the juxtaposition in my mind between the poster demanding the right to ‘meaninglessness’ and dummies with their insides taken out makes me think that must be a ‘truism’. The winners of the ACE (Art and Christianity Enquiry) Award 2011 for art in a religious context were announced recently, with an exhortation to visit them in situ at St John’s Chapel, Healy, in Northumberland. They are two memorial windows: James Hugonin’s ‘Contrary Rhythm’ and Anne Vibeke Mou’s ‘Untitled’.

International performance collective Bernadita Croxatto, Emma Dixon, Kimvi Nguyen and Andrea Willette will be performing ‘The Companion of Space’ at Winchester Cathedral on Wednesday 2^nd November 2011 from 13.30 to 15.30. Rejoicing in the achievement of faith and passion this time-based work will encourage visitors to think about the years of hard-work and dedication invested in building the Cathedral.

Michael Pinsky: Intersection

Michael Pinsky’s ‘Intersection’ a newly installed permanent commission for St Bernadette’s Catholic Secondary School in Bristol is a giant illuminated grid. The work takes as its starting point the shared time pupils spend together at the school. Pinsky describes this period as a ‘cross roads’, the ‘cross’ being further referenced by the faith school setting. Learn more on the Art and Sacred Places website……………
