ASP’s AGM will be held on Saturday 12th May 2012 at Studio 16, 21 Wren Street, London, WC1X 0HF from 14.30 to 16.30, by kind permission of Dr Alf Löhr.

Following a short AGM, there will be a talk by and discussion with David Mach RA about his ‘Precious Light’ exhibition celebrating the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible.

‘Precious Light’ was an explosive and daring exhibition’ of over 70 new works of large scale collage and sculpture ‘inspired by and confronting the narratives of the Bible’ shown at the City Art Centre during the 2011 Edinburgh Art Festival.

Described as ‘contrary, funny and wilfully unpretentious’, London-based, Scottish- born David Mach, has said how he was ‘struck by how much The King James Bible is about how we speak now, the language of today comes off those pages.’

‘The Destruction of Jericho’ is viewed from the inside of a family people carrier and ‘The Nativity’ occurred in a post apocalyptic shack made of telegraph poles and upturned cars.

The talk is free to members but there will be a small charge of £5 for non-members. Refreshments will be served.

Described by the Dean of Southwark as a dramatic sculpture which will “bring home to people the human agony of the Crucifixion” ‘Die Harder’ will be on display in the Cathedral in front of the veiled altar screen until Good Friday 6th April. Admission to the Cathedral, during opening hours, is free.

The robustly proportioned, yet poingnant figure of Christ, can be seen being manhandled onto the cross in the Cathedral in the video by Peter Zabb: http://vimeo.com/m/37366180

“The figure of Christ is in pain and anguish pierced by thousands of spears, that single body acting as a conduit for all the cares and the woes in the world” says the artist talking of the lowly, humble coat hangers which pierce the figure, acting like a “language or currency common to us all”.

As the Venice Biennale 2011 draws to a close I am still thinking, as was intended, about Thomas Hirschhorn’s ‘Crystal of Resistance’ for the Swiss Pavilion. Although the presence of ‘too much’ was designed to resist opinions the juxtaposition in my mind between the poster demanding the right to ‘meaninglessness’ and dummies with their insides taken out makes me think that must be a ‘truism’. Before it is taken down at the end of January 2012 see more about Hirschhorn’s search for truth on the website for the project……………..
